Ohira Tomae

Ohira Tomae is one of the most famous and prized types of natural Japanese sharpening stones from Mount Ohira (大平山) in Kyoto.

General characteristics

• Type: Natural finishing stone.
• Roughness: High - often considered to be very close to or even above the 8000+ synthetic grain size, although natural stones do not have a standardised grain size.
• Usage: Used for final polishing of blades (knives, chisels, swords, etc.). Particularly appreciated for its ability to give a mirror-like surface and to bring out the 'kasumi' (matt/mirror contrast) effect.
• Feeling: Mostly a soft, "buttery" sensation when sanding.

• "Tomae" (戸前) refers to a specific layer or type of stone found in some mountains, including Ohira. It is one of the main categories of natural sharpening stones, along with Asagi, Kiita, Shiro Suita etc.
