History and prestige
Nakayama (中山) is one of Japan's most famous and prized natural sharpening stone quarries, located in the Kyoto region near Mount Atago. These stones have been used in Japan for more than 800 years, from polishing samurai swords to sharpening modern razors and tools.
Maruka (丸鹿 or Maruichi / ㋕) mark is the most prestigious mark for Nakayama stones. It means that the stone has been selected and approved as ideal by the famous Kato family (later Hatanaka) from the old Shouhonyama (Shohonyama) quarry. Traditionally, Maruka stones have been reserved for professionals, such as master cutters (kamisori) and high-end tools. Due to limited resources and the closure of the quarry in the mid-20th century, Maruka stones have become a real rarity and a collector's trophy. Good specimens are highly valued on the market.
