Powder made from natural Japanese whetstone, collected by grinding high-quality Shiro (White) Lyoto Japanese Natural Stone raw material. The powder is sifted through approximately 2 mm sieve, so it is not a particularly fine, laboratory-grade powder—it may contain particles of natural stone of various sizes.

The material is neutral, which makes it well-suited for use with steel—it promotes less rusting than the more acidic natural stones found in some regions. Due to its higher mica content, the powder has good adhesion and a pleasant, soft feel. Compared to other Iyō powders, its texture is drier and more slippery.

Usage

This powder can be used for various traditional Japanese sharpening and polishing tasks:

to remove burrs (flash) – by mixing the powder with water and applying the suspension to a fabric surface;
for polishing and a natural hazy (kasumi) effect extract;
for finishing various knives and other cutting tools;
for the production of wooden sharpening surfaces (mokuken / mokuto);
experimental methods of traditional Japanese sharpening and polishing.

One of the simplest ways is to mix the powder with water and then absorb the resulting supernatant into sashiko / cotton fabric and use it as a flexible surface for polishing and removing scale. When used properly, the cloth gradually darkens as a result of the iron particles it removes.

The powder can also be further ground into a finer fraction using mortar.

Traditional Uses

In Japan, this type of natural stone powder can be used in the production of so-called wooden whetstones, when the stone powder is embedded in the surface of the wood. Porous hardwood is particularly suitable for this, as the powder can become firmly embedded in its pores.

Such surfaces are particularly useful for sharpening curved knives and other tools with complex geometries, when using a standard hard natural stone is not practical or when you want to conserve a valuable sharpening stone.
