Like most Aizu, this stone has a fairly moderate hardness and does not easily release its suspension. It sharpens efficiently as long as the surface remains moist. Ideal shape. This stone is equivalent to artificial products of approximately 800-1500 grit. It can be used to finish knife sharpening or to prepare the surface for further finishing with another natural stone. You can increase the speed and ease of grinding by using a slurry forced by a diamond plate.

This stone has Aizu's characteristic light grey colour with dark and white spots.

Aizu (会津砥)
This mine, unlike most, is not near Kyoto, but further north near Fukushima. These stones are perhaps the most desirable medium-grained nakatoishi from Japan. Aizu's natural sharpening stones typically range in colour from light grey or bluish to mint green with white flecks and rare black or grey 'lotus rings'. The mine was closed in the 1960s due to health problems among the mine workers.
