Currently, the only genuine and new Nakayama sharpening finishing stones are marketed by Hatanaka, the last owner of the mine. He alone owns the right to use the Nakayama mine name, along with the copyrighted names and ink stamps associated with it, even though the mine is physically closed. He has retained the right to stamp any inventory left over from his family's business, and many of his new stones are believed to be sourced from the vast stockpiles of rough that have been mined since his father was a partner in Kato.
Hatanaka manages the business as shrewdly as Kato, without flooding the market with stones that travel from him through his chosen channels. He also sees the activities of stamp forgers. His company is at the top of the tennen toishi world pyramid, and reputation is the most important thing to him, which is why authentic Hatahoshi Hatanaka stones have always stood out for the highest quality and are highly valued.
