Like a traditional samurai sword, these Kamisori were hand-forged from 2 layers, the cutting part made of high-carbon steel and the support layer of a simpler steel. The steel layer is brittle and hard, while the sheath provides the necessary flexibility.
Both layers are not rustproof, so always keep the razor dry after shaving and protect it with a thin layer of oil. Why is rusty steel chosen for this razor? Rust-free razors are made from an alloy that will prevent corrosion stains, but will also be less hard and less sharp. High carbon steel, like the cutting layer of this Kamisori, gives a much higher hardness and will maintain a smooth shave for much longer before needing to be sharpened again, and it can be sharpened much sharper!
