Although the surface is large enough to be functional for small sharpening work, the shape of this stone makes it best suited as a luxurious tomo-nagura for larger sharpening stones. The stone is very fine and not too hard, making it an ideal suspension donor for the extra fine and hard Awasedo stones.
The stone exhibits kiita and asagi colors with a nashiji layer. The back side is uneven.
Aiiwatani (相岩谷, 相岩谷産, 岩谷, Iwatani, Iwadani, Ai Iwatani, Aiwadani)
This prolific Eastern mine produced stones reputed to be hard and fine. They are often sold as a cheaper alternative to the very hard Nakayama awasedo used to finish razors and carpentry tools.
