The Surgical Black Arkansas sharpening stone is approximately 4000-6000 grit. As the name suggests, it will create a very sharp blade, like a scalpel. Long and wide enough for all sharpening tasks, from kitchen knives, various woodworking tools to razors. The stone is in a separate wooden box for storage and transportation.
It is best to use mineral oil, baby oil, special sharpening oil or olive oil when working with all Arkansas stones. Apply a few drops to the surface of the stone to prevent clogging, reduce friction during sharpening and keep the stone clean. Water can also be used, but grease gives a slightly better result. Using water will also make cleaning the stone a bit more difficult. Especially if you have used a stone with oil before.
These natural stones are very hard and do not need to be sanded as often as most synthetic stones.
