Vintage German Puma razors are appreciated as high-quality shaving tools, and were manufactured in Germany, mostly in Solingen, a town that has long been famous for its knives and shaving tools. "Puma is a well-known brand associated not only with sportswear and footwear, but also with traditional straight razors and other knife products, which were particularly popular in the mid-20th century.

  1. Production history:
    • "Puma razors were manufactured in Solingen, Germany, where Puma-Werk Lauterjung und Sohn (founded in 1769) is still active. This company specialised in the manufacture of knives, razors and other sharp tools.
    • Vintage models mostly date back to the 1940s and 1970s, when handmade razors were very popular.
    • "Puma razors have been appreciated for their precision craftsmanship, durability and aesthetic design.
  2. Features:
    • Materials: Blades are usually made of high quality carbon steel or stainless steel for sharpness and corrosion resistance. Handles were made of natural materials such as horn, wood, mother-of-pearl or plastic (e.g. Bakelite).
    • Design: Puma razors often had engraved details on the blade, such as the brand logo or model number. Their design was elegant, with attention to detail.
    • ModelsA: Popular vintage models have unique numbers (e.g. Puma 193, Puma 89) that indicate different designs or series.
  3. Collector's value:
    • Vintage Puma razors are highly prized by collectors for their rarity, quality and historical significance. Particularly desirable are models that are in good condition or have their original packaging.
    • The market price depends on the condition of the razor, the rarity of the model and the material of the handle. Well-preserved specimens can cost from a few dozen to several hundred euros.
  4. Use and maintenance:
    • These razors require regular maintenance: re-sharpening on the leather strop and protection against rust.
    • Thanks to their sharpness and quality, they are still used by traditional shaving enthusiasts, although they require more skill than modern multi-purpose razors.

Why are Puma razors considered exceptional?

  • Mastery: Solingen is a world centre for knife making and Puma has maintained the highest standards.
  • Durability: Properly maintained razors can last for decades.
  • Aesthetics: Elegant design and handmade details make them not only functional but also works of art.
