It is located in the hills of Kyoto Prefecture, close to the H\u014dzukawa and Atago mountain ranges, where the highest quality stone has been mined since the Edo period (17th century) <em>Awasedo<\/em> stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The geology of the region - extremely fine sedimentary layers of quartzite, silica and iron oxides - has resulted in some of the cleanest, most homogeneous and highest quality stone in Japan.
