Belgian sharpening whetstones (Coticule)

Summary based on Henk Bos's booklet *Grinding and Honing Part 4: Belgian Whetstones*

For centuries, the Ardennes region of Belgium has been famous for its unique natural whetstones, known as Coticule. These stones are considered among the best in the world for sharpening razors, knives, chisels, and other tools. Henk Bos’s booklet *Grinding and Honing Part 4. Belgian Whetstones,„ published in 2013, provides detailed information based on more than 40 years of experience, photographs, and collaboration with leading experts—Maurice Celis (owner of Ardennes Coticule) and Bart Thorfs.

Coticule is a natural metamorphic rock whose main abrasive component is— Spessartite garnets (30–42 %). The garnets are very fine (typically 10–13 microns), and they penetrate the steel by only about 3 microns. The most important feature of Coticule is its soft matrix (mica + quartz), which allows worn-out garnets to break away easily, allowing new ones to take over.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Grit range: from 800 to 16,000 (depending on the slurry density and pressure).
  • Density: 2.8–3.27 g/cm³.
  • Hardness (according to the sclerometer): 800–3,000 grams.
  • Cutting speed and smoothness depends heavily on how it is used.

How do the properties vary with mass (slurry):

  • A thick, paste-like suspension → Fast cutting (1000–2000 grit).
  • Milky colors suspension → 4,000–6,000 grit.
  • Thin suspension → 8,000–12,000 grit.
  • Only with clean water → Up to 16,000 grit, for an exceptionally smooth and sharp finish.

Unlike synthetic stones, Coticule creates wavy a smooth cut rather than sharp zigzag scratches. As a result, the finish is very gentle on the skin and long-lasting.

The most important Coticule layers in the Ol’Preu quarry

The quarry consists of a dozen or so layers, each with its own unique characteristics:

  1. La Grosse Blanche A light, creamy, soft stone. Quick-drying with a soapy texture. Rare. Polishes beautifully and is suitable for sensitive skin. Darkens over time when exposed to sunlight.
  2. The Big Yellow One Yellowish, slower but very consistent. Ideal for a perfect, smooth edge. When used with water, it creates a „magnetic“ sensation.
  3. The Blue Trainer and Upper Layer Often crossed with Belgian Blue (BBW). Moderate speed, various color markings (red and orange stripes). Very reliable for everyday use.
  4. La Veinette One of the best shaving creams. Very smooth, quick, and fine. A creamy texture that's easy to use.
  5. La Petite Blanche A fast-acting, milky-white suspension that is thicker than Dressante.
  6. Les Latneuses Soft, with a hybrid layer (chlorite + quartz). The hybrid surface is ideal for very fine polishing.
  7. La Nouvelle Veine , La Grise , La Verte Thicker layers, suitable for wider knives. Different speeds and colors.
  8. La Veine aux Clous Very rare, soft, porous.

Other Belgian stones

  • Belgian Blue Whetstone (BBW) – blue, ~4000–5000 grit, often used in combination with Coticule.
  • Rouge du Salm / Pierre Lorraine – red, ~6000 grit.
  • Gres de Cierreux, Pierre, known as Levant, CotPyr, Cotcarb – Coarser options for initial sharpening.

Sharpening Principles with Coticule

Coticule differs from synthetic stones in that:

  • The thick mixture is being processed lapping The process: the grenades roll along and gently remove the material.
  • With clean water—a true polish that gives a mirror-like shine.

Tips:

  • Make sure the stone is completely flat.
  • Use light pressure for detailed work.
  • Change the mixture regularly.
  • Avoid diamond-tipped bits—they can damage natural garnets.

History and Interesting Facts

  • Ardennes Coticule has „Handmade in Belgium“the “ symbol.
  • There is a „Kosher“Coticule – completely pure, without inclusions, and extremely rare.”.
  • Vintage stones: Vieille Roche, Old Rock, Les Petas, etc.
  • Currently, only one main quarry is in operation—Thier del Preu. There are plans to reopen the Regné shaft.

Conclusion

Belgian Coticule stones are not just sharpening stones, but works of art. Each stone is unique, and when used properly, they provide exceptional sharpness and smoothness that is difficult to achieve with synthetic stones. The right grit and proper technique allow you to achieve professional results at home—especially for razors and high-quality knives.
