This stone has a cemented cleavage, but there is still a long way to go. Moreover, even when it is reached, the damaged corner can be removed to avoid interference with sharpening. If the performance were below average, the corner could be discarded, but
as it has eight layers, it can be used. The excavation of this layer of stone was completed around 200 years ago, but it is certainly there.

The eight-layered grinding stone was very popular for grinding artistic swords in the Edo period. The reason for this seems to be that fine polishing has fewer imperfections and the polishing can be done by fine adjustments. In the Taihei era, swords were not only instruments of murder, but had already established themselves as works of art.

Even now, when I visit sword sharpeners that have gone out of business, I sometimes come across a variety of eight-layer whetstones. Among them, Nakayama 8 layers are sold at very high prices.

The above properties make it ideal for adjusting the surface of knives, finishing chisels and planes.
Although you don't want to, I think it's safe to say that the probability of encountering eight-layered stones in the future is almost zero.
