Henkotsu kamisori NOS (New Old Stock) - one of the better known Japanese kamisori brands, produced in the mid-20th century for professional use. Henkotsu razors are appreciated for:

  • high quality Yasuki Steel (mostly Shirogami #2),
  • precise geometry,
  • good sharpening behaviour,
  • stories - both for use by professional hairdressers and for export to other countries.

Like a traditional samurai sword, these Kamisori were hand-forged from 2 layers, the cutting part made of high-carbon steel and the support layer of a simpler steel. The steel layer is brittle and hard, while the sheath provides the necessary flexibility.

Both layers are not rustproof, so always keep the razor dry after shaving and protect it with a thin layer of oil. Why does this blade rust? Rust-free blades are made from an alloy that will prevent corrosion stains but will also be less hard. High carbon steel, like the cutting layer of this Kamisori, gives a much higher hardness and will keep you shaving smoothly for much longer before you need to sharpen again!
